Volume IV investigates the issuing and care of arms, and then shows just which units of the `Company's Service' (i.e. the Bengal, Madras and Bombay Armies) and the `Royal Service' (i.e. the British Army) used the various natures and patterns of East India Company smallarms at successive periods. Another is that there are four armies to cover: those of Bengal, Madras and Bombay, plus the British Army in India (who often used East India Company smallarms).
